Scholar partnership AvH
In january 2005, FBH and Alexander-von-Humboldt-Oberschule (AvH) started their scholar partnerschip and sucessfully initiated and run various projects. In close cooperation with FBH's scientists, students for example built up and adjusted a helium neon laser and thus directly experienc how a laser works in principle. On occasions like "Night of Sciences" the students pass their newly gained knowledge to interested visitors by explaining and demonstrating the basic principle of the laser. In addition, each year FBH offers about 10 students the opportunity to learn more about basic principles and applications of light and lasers. Tasks within this FBH laser work group are ranging from experiments and measurements up to knowledge transfer of the theoretical background. Within this work group further experiments and demonstrators are developed to illustrate FBH's research.
The concept of the cooperation stresses hands-on elements and thus intends to arouse interest for scientific issues. The institute also wants to help students with their career entry. By means of internships, guided tours and information sessions about various job profiles at the institute, FBH gives students the possibility to gain insight in the everyday life of a research institute in order to facilitate career choice.
Alexander-von-Humboldt Oberschule
AvH is a Berlin high school located in Treptow-Köpenick with 50 teachers giving lessons to 730 students. Every year, the school offers a special class with emphasis on mathematic and scientific topics. Students thus are given the opportunity to intensify mathematic and natural scientific lessons already in the seventh grade in order to impart the outstanding relevance of mathematics, physics and chemistry also for everyday life.
Lessons are demanding with a highly experimental part especially in natural sciences. Since 1991 pupils decide for intensive courses, which are offered in all natural scientific courses. Many of the students represent the school by sucessfully competing in mathematics, physics and chemistry contests. The school is not only committed to natural sciences, students also take part in art exhibitions and German language contests.
