GaN-Based Blue and Green Lasers

The goal of the work is the development of GaN-based laser diodes for the blue and green spectral range. Important applications for these lasers are

  • Projection displays ("Laser-TV")
  • Bio analytics (e.g. DNA-sequencing with fluorescent labels)
  • Ar-ion laser replacement  (488 nm, 514 nm)
  • Color photo printing
  • Data communication with polymer optical fibers

The challenges of this research activity are primarily related to materials development, whereby different, fundamentally new concepts are pursued for the realization of green laser diodes. These include the growth of laser heterostructures on non- and semipolar GaN surfaces and the development of growth processes for the epitaxy of defective-free InGaN nanostructures. The intermediate-term goal of the project is to extend the laser diode emission spectrum into the blue spectral region near 450 nm and then further into the green spectral range beyond 500 nm.
