Frequency-stabilized diode lasers for next generation metrology and life sciences

The project "frequency-stabilized diode lasers for next generation metrology and life sciences" (FinDLiNG) aims at the development of robust and compact laser systems. The research consortium covers the whole value chain, aiming to render the technology of helium-neon lasers obsolete. Using frequency stabilized diode lasers instead of HeNe gas tubes is believed to enable scientific breakthroughs not only in the fields of quantum optics, atom and molecule spectroscopy and quantum communications, but also to lead to new applications for industrial customers. The industry requires absolute-stabilized lasers for metrology in emerging markets such as life sciences (e.g. eye surgery) and semiconductor wafer processing (e.g. wafer stepper positioning).

In the framework of the project, the R&D effort is distributed among three partners: the Ferdinand-Braun-Institut (FBH), TOPTICA Photonics AG, and LEICA Geosystems AG:

  • The FBH conducts research and development regarding semiconductors and optics. Tailored semiconductor lasers and amplifiers will be manufactured based on simulations, design, and III-V technology. The chips will be integrated in miniaturized master-oscillator power-amplifier (MOPA) prototype modules using suitable micro-optics.
  • Toptica will contribute with its knowledge in frequency stabilization and develop a frequency-stabilized laser system.
  • Leica will then integrate the developed system into its absolute tracker to test its performance.

The partners Toptica and Leica will enable the easy access to the relevant scientific and industrial markets.
